School Girls 15 & Under Championships

Round 1 – Tasmania v Queensland
In their first round match against Queensland, the Tasmanian side were struggling to keep up due to a lack of match fitness and tired legs, with Kendell Bardenhagen forced to leave the court after rolling her ankle. The team had less than perfect decision making which allowed Queensland to capitalise on every turnover. To the teams credit they continued to attack the ball but it was to no avail, Queensland running out convincing winners 51-27.

Round 2 – Tasmania v Northern Territory
Shooters Danni Pickett and Estelle Margetts rose to the occasion in their match against Northern Territory. Their movement and accuracy kept the Tasmanian side ahead at every break. The team were driving well through the mid court in their transition from defence into attack. Nicola Harper also had an ankle injury scare during the match. It was a great team effort to run out eventual winners 43-27.

Tasmania had few answers for a well drilled Victorian outfit. The Tassie girls were persistent and continued to make every effort to win the ball. The second quarter was a much better effort with accurate shooting from Danni Pickett keeping Tasmania in the game with a 6-10 quarter score, as Ashlea Mawer at only 13 years of age stood up to the pressure from Victorias’ defenders. The third quarter saw Tasmania match Victoria, with Emma Davy and Clare McKimmie feeding into the goalies strongly. 27 was a great finishing score for the Tasmanian team, with contributions from shooters Danni Pickett (15), Ashlea Mawer (9) and Estelle Margetts (3). Defender Emma Salter put in a great effort for the team before sustaining an ankle injury. The final score saw Victoria finish on top, 56-27.

Round 7 – Tasmania v Western Australia
After a tough encounter against Victoria, Tasmania came out firing against Western Australia. Danni Pickett and Estelle Margetts were shooting accurately, while Claudia Maher alongside Laura Elliott defended strongly to keep the WA attack under constant pressure. Nicola Harper and Kendell Bardenhagen continued their good form, driving the ball with speed onto the edge of the Tasmanian goal circle. Tasmania lead into the first break, before heading into the half time break with the scores level. In an exciting tussle the two teams were evenly matched and the game finished with the scores even at 36 all, reflecting a long hard battle over the four quarters.

ACT turned the ball over in the second quarter which ended 16 all. Estelle Margetts moved into the goal shooter position at half time and was very accurate. Emma Davy came on at half time into centre and continued the defensive pressure, which caused ACT to make errors. Third quarter Tasmanian defenders Claudia Maher and Laura Elliot in the circle and Emma Archer at wing defence worked hard, however full court zone pressure from ACT had them leading by 2 at three quarter time.
